Year 8's BBC News School Report
On Thursday 27th March, a group of Year 8 Hewett School students took part in the national BBC News School Report, becoming fully-fledged journalists for the day.
The 35 students divided up responsibilities as researchers, reporters and presenters to produce five news reports and four written news articles before the 2:00pm deadline. They reported on a range of national, regional and school-specific stories, from speaking to geography teacher Mr Fromant about the missing Malaysian plane to interviewing Mr Anthony about the proposal for longer school days. Other reports included an investigation into eating disorders and self-harm, a technology piece about universal phone chargers and a live Skype interview with under-21s Norwich right-back, Harry Barker. There were also two interviews with Nurse Downer, who was asked about the issues surrounding teenage pregnancy as well as the dangers of taking harmful substances. “They were very calm and respectful in their interviewing techniques and they conducted themselves very professionally,” said Nurse Downer. A team from BBC Voices helped out on the day and also produced a video summarising the students' work. The full reports can be found on the school website or by visiting: http://www.hewett.org.uk/bbc2014.html
